Baltic Gold Cup
-
The tournament consists of 2 sections - North & South of the River Thames
Each section plays out until there is a North & a South winner. These 2 players contest a final at a mutually agreed venue, with the winner crowned Gold Cup champion
The first listed golfer is the “home” player (usually in bold)
It is up to either player to contact the other and arrange the match, which would usually be played at the “home” player’s club. In the event the “home” player does not have a club, both need to agree on a venue which can include the ”away” player’s club
The final needs to be completed prior to our Annual Dinner (10 October 2024) so please complete your matches on time
The “visiting” player receives a courtesy extra shot
The tournament is singles match-play format over 18 holes, basis full handicap difference. If one player does not have a WHS handicap, then there is no adjustment applied to that player’s handicap.
Sudden death if the match is all-square after the 18th
Loser pays for all the green fees (so every player will only pay once)
The Gold Cup was first contested in 1901, when it was originally called The Baltic Golf Challenge Cup, with Mr L Hinton coming out as the winner. In 1921 it was re-named The Gold Cup, sadly we do not seem to have the reasoning behind this in our archive. To date (2023) it has been contested on 107 occasions, with breaks for both World Wars (1915-1920 & 1940-1946) and also 2 occasions in 1986 (not sure why) and 2020 when Covid interrupted play. There have been 59 different winners, but only one person has managed a hat-trick of 3 consecutive wins which was achieved by Mr R.C. Chatter (1936-1938). The most wins is held by Mr R.M. Turnbull who won it 9 times with his first victory in 1939 and his final one in 1968. Our current Champion is Mr Jeremy Brewer, who also won the Cup in 2022 & 2010.
The tournament is singles match-play format over 18 holes (until the final) and sudden death if the match is still all square after the 18th. The draw for the first round is held at the A.G.M. in January and matches are to be arranged between the players within specified timings in order to complete the tournament prior to the end of season Annual Dinner in October. There are 2 sections of the draw namely North and South of the River Thames. Each half of the draw play through the knock out rounds until there is an eventual winner of each section and these 2 players contest the final over 36 holes at a mutually agreed venue. The final should be played prior to the year end Annual Dinner which is usually scheduled for end October, as this is when the new winner receives the trophy.
The Gold Cup is open to any Baltic Exchange Golfing Society member and it is not a requirement to be a golf club member as it is possible to play at your opponent’s club or a club that allows members of the public to book and play.
